DANO ALERT: in celebration of the upcoming "Dan Reed Week" festivities,
each day we'll present a new photo of Dan's recent gallivanting around town!

"The opportunity to teach at Chapel Hill, and to build an internationally
recognized, broadly-based research institute, made
this an irresistible opportunity," Reed said.
-- Dan loves to teach

"We're very lucky to have somebody who is so visible and prominent
as this institute director serving as a regular teacher in one
of our departments," Kelly said.
-- Dan's wish to teach gets lots of press coverage

Every CS student wonders why the illustrious Dan Reed isn't offering
the exciting, advanced networking classes he'd originally hoped to teach.
Well, take it easy on the guy, because Dan's simply too busy networking
himself.  Here's a photo of Dan networking -- coming from yet another
meeting with Chancellor Moeser:

Dan in front of South Building

Fortunately for UNC's students, networking with the Chancellor and other
fantasticos isn't nearly as compelling to Dan as is teaching.  As he said in
his own presentation to UNC IT staff, "Teaching is a privilege, not a duty."
("ITS Hall Meeting" Sep 20 2004, meant to excite employees
about the upcoming staff-cutting "reorganization")

Teaching is an privilege, not a duty
(By the way, for everyone else but Dan: consilience )

In the great tradition of the ancient Greeks (later revived during the Renaissance),
masters of knowledge and wisdom shared their teachings with the next generation.
As the great Renaissance man we all know him to be, Dan wants to be the next link
in that tradition.  Here he is hanging out, playing foosball in the graduate students'
lounge.
So you see, Dan really does yearn to be with students.  (And were any of you
kind enough to join him?  No!  So, help Dan help you!  Help Dan ... help you!)

Where has Dan been, you ask?  Where are the updates?
Well, fear not, because he's making a comeback:

There are some who are in darkness
And the others are in light
And you see the ones in brightness
Those in darkness drop from sight ...

That's right, friends, Dan is back!  But where is he?  Well,
he's about to do for the town of Chapel Hill what he's
done for a few lucky departments at UNC!

Moeser's letter to Chapel Hill Mayor Kevin Foy

And whad'ya know?  Moeser's letter led to a real, live meeting!
Our growing spy network got this for us:

memorandum-from Chapel Hill IT Dept

Sigh.  "No specific proposals or agreements were discussed."  Is this samo samo, Dano Dano?
Well, at least Jim Gogan is involved, he's superb.  But will that be enough?
You'll just have to tune in tomorrow for an update!

Can you help? Have you seen Dan Reed?  We're very concerned for his welfare.  Since he came to UNC-Chapel Hill, Computer Science students have yet to see this man of distinction, let alone have the honor of hearing him lecture. Apparently, it is even impossible just to get an audience with him.   Where could he be? If you have any information regarding the whereabouts of Dan Reed, please send an email to: missing--AT--whereisdanreed.com

We've received the following clues, some of which have led directly to Dano-sightings:

Is Dan Reed actually a cop who busts kids for dope in their lockers?

Is "Dan" actually a teacher who just pretends to be Dan Reed so he can be cool and not teach?

President Bush can't get enough of Dan

Mr. Reed goes to Washington - like a modern-day Jimmy Stewart

"Where in the World is Dan Reed?" - a network topology game

Dan's Blog -- not updated since June 2005, is Dan MIA?
[Ed. has even the blog gone MIA now?]
